Welcome to Newport Rec Reunion Event Services

The Great Friends Meeting House and Why It Matters

In the Beginning… Built in 1699, the Great Friends Meeting House stood as the heart of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) for more than 200 years. Initially a place of worship for Quakers, it later transformed into "The Rec," a vibrant community center that became a cornerstone for sports, arts, and education—particularly serving Newport's Black community.

At Newport Rec Reunion, we are passionate about keeping Newport's vibrant spirit alive. Through our reunion events, we honor the legacy of the Great Friends Meeting House by creating meaningful connections and joyful celebrations that unite the community.

The Heart of Our Community: Programs at “The Rec”

Welcome to the story of “The Rec” – a cornerstone of community, a hub for nurturing talents, and a space where connections thrived. Its legacy is one of togetherness, strength, and shared joy.

Basketball & Sports Enthusiasts

At the heart of “The Rec” was its basketball court, a beloved hub for church leagues, neighborhood teams, and school practices. These games were more than competitions; they were vibrant social events that often extended into dances or community gatherings, creating cherished memories for all.

Theater & Performing Arts

The 200-seat theater at “The Rec” came alive with captivating performances by the Newport Players’ Guild, vibrant fashion shows, and engaging talent reviews. Upstairs, the second floor thrived as a hub of creativity and education. From arts and crafts, cooking, and sewing to music lessons and tutoring programs, it became a space where talents were nurtured, life skills were developed, and generations found inspiration.

Youth Programs and Community Clubs

“The Rec” served as a cornerstone of community and connection for Newport’s youth. It was home to Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout Troop 1, and a thriving 4-H Chapter, all dedicated to fostering mentorship, adventure, and personal growth. These groups not only taught valuable life lessons but also organized unforgettable trips to iconic destinations like the United Nations and the Statue of Liberty. Whether learning new skills or simply enjoying a game of cards, young people found a safe, supportive environment where they could thrive.

Friends’ Playground: Where Summer Fun Begins

Adjacent to "The Rec" was Friends’ Playground, a lively hub for outdoor activities and community gatherings. With sandboxes, a tennis court, a sliding board, and Newport’s only “tot lot,” it became the heart of summer excitement. The playground offered a variety of programs, including arts and crafts, competitive softball games, and citywide Olympic events. One of its proudest achievements was the flourishing Black Tennis League, which produced a city champion and cemented its place in local history.
